Contemporary study in detail- Burger (2009) Flashcards
Aims
To see if the results of Milgram’s study was still relevent today.
Procedure of Base condition
A mild 15v shock was administered to the participants, and the study went to 150v. Participants came from a newspaper advertisement. They met the confederate, and he was told to remember word pairs, and was shocked if they got it wrong. The responses were pre-recorded. The participant was immediately debriefed.
Procedure of Moral refused condition
It was largely the same as base condition, but there were two confederates. the draw was rigged, and there were two teachers. They observed Mr Wallace being strapped into a chair, and were told what to do. The confederate began pressing switches and stopped at 90v. The experimenter tries to make them continue, but the participant takes his place.
Results
70% continued after 150v (Base), 63.3% continued after 150v (moral), compared to 82.5% in Milgrams original
Conclusions
The reaction was mostly the same as in the original. Participants were no less obedient in the moral refused condition.
