Q

what ethical considerations and adaptions did Burger make to Milgram’s study?

A
  • 2 step screening process
  • right to withdraw was given three times (twice in writting)
  • a clinical psychologist was present as the experimenter who was informed to stop the study if ptps look extremeley distressed.
  • the sample shock voltage changed from 45v to 15v
  • they were told immediately after the study that the confederate was not actually recieving electric shocks.

Q

Burger had several hypothesis what were these?

A
  • would people still obey today: he thought they would based on a recent study done by Blass (2000)
  • gender: he did not think there would be any gender differences
  • personality: he thought people with higher empathy levels would be more likely to not obey
  • norm information: he thought that having someone else refuse to continue would influence how obedient someone was.

Q

what happened during the first screening?

A

it was a phone interview where ptps were asked 6 mental health q’s and if they answered “Yes” to any of them then they would be excluded from the study
- if they had two or more psychology classes they also couldn’t be apart of the study?

Q

what happened during the second screening?

A
  • they met with a clinical psychologist at the Santa Clara university and they were assessed on levels of empathy and their need for control.
  • also excluded if they may of reacted negatively to the study.

Q

how were they assigned to either the base condition or the modelled refusal condition?

A

randomly, but an effort was made to ensure gender ratio’s were roughly equal.

Q

how did they decide who would be the teacher and who would be the learner?

A

names was taken from a rigged draw.

so the confederate was always the learner and the participant was always the teacher.

Q

the participant and confederate were taken where after they were assigned their roles?

A

to another room where the participant watched the ecperimenter strap in the confederate to stop excessive movement to a (phoney) electric shock generator.

Q

what did the confederate say to the experimenter once he was strapped into the chair?

A

“i have a heart problem but nothing to serious” in which the experimenter replied “the shocks are painful, but not dangerous.”

14
Q

what was the learners task?

A

they had to remember each, 25 word pairs. the experimenter would read the first word of the word pair, followed by four other words and the confederate had to indicate which word was the correct one by pressing certain buttons.

15
Q

what happened to the participant when he was taken away from the confederate and into another room?

A

he/she experienced a sample shock of 15v (only 2 people refused) and was explained to them that it was a one way room, they could hear the confederate but the confederate can’t hear you.

16
Q

what were the responses from the confederate?

A

they gave correct and incorrect responses based on the script followed by Milgram.

17
Q

what was the computer inside the fake shock generator programmed to do?

A

pre-recorded sounds depending on certain switches that were pressed, the grunts got louder as the volts increased.

18
Q

if participants spoke to the experimenter what was their response?

A

the responsibility was there own and there would be know permanent tissue damage.

19
Q

what happened once the experiment was finished?

A

the participants were told that the confederate was fine and not being shocked, and taken for a debrief.

20
Q

in the modelled refusal condition was the procedure different to the base?

A

no, appart from adding another confederate/

21
Q

what was the role of the additional confederate?

A

he additional confederate played the role of another teacher (teacher 1) and
was the same gender as the real participant (Teacher 2). Both teachers sat next to each other in the
lab room, with the real participant on the right.

22
Q

The confederate teacher shows no sign of hesitation until when?

A

75v They pause and then continue

23
Q

what happened After pressing the 90 volt switch and receiving the first verbal prod from the experimenter,

A

the teacher confederate refuses to continue. They say ‘I don’t
think I can do this’ and push their chair away from the shock generator.

24
Q

what is the particpant told to do after the confederate teacher refuses to continue?

A

told to please continue and the confederate sits their quietly avoiding eye contact.

25
Q

what were the results of the base condition

A

70% went to continue with the experiment after 150 volts. This rate is slightly lower
than in Milgram’s study (82.5% in experiment 5), although not a big enough difference to be
statistically significant.

26
Q

what was found in the modelled refusal condition?

A

Contrary to expectation, the percentage of participants in this condition who
went to continue past 150 volts was 63.3%. This was not found to be a statistically significant
difference from the base condition
