Contaminated Runway Flashcards
Contaminated Runway
- More than 25%
- Water more 3mm (0.125 inch)
* Slush or loose snow more 3mm (0.125 inch
* Compressed snow
* ice (including Wet Ice
Wet Runway
- Runway surface covered in water
* less than or equal to 3mm or
* enough moisture to cause surface to appear reflective but not significant standing water
Damp Runway
- Not Dry but surface not reflective or shiny
- Considered WET for Performance calculations
Dry Runway
- Not wet or Contaminated
When should Contaminated Runway be considered
- Take off and Landing Performance.
- Operating on Taxiway and Apron
Is Poor / Less than Poor / Code 1 allowed?
No Prohibited unless emergency use requires it.
Cold Weather Taxi / Tyres
- Flat Spot
- Short taxi will not warm up resulting in nose wheel vibrations on take off
Contaminated RWY RTO considerations
- Loss of directional Control
If Reject: - Rudder for direction until 50kts
- Deselect Breaks
- Deselect Rev Thrust
- Gain control and reapply
- Breaking distance increased
Contaminated RWY take off considerations
- Slow Acceleration
- Poor Stopping
- XWind directional control
- Water ingestion (CON ON)
- Ruts
Contaminated RWY airborne considerations
- Ice on leading Edge, WAI?
- Ice in Flaps, could freeze
Contaminated RWY Approach considerations
Accurate
- Approach Speed
- Touch down zone 1500’
- Firm Touch down
Contaminated RWY Landing considerations
- Firm Touch down @ 1500’
- Nose Wheel down
- Auto Breaks
- Speed Breaks
- Rev Thrust
- Directional Control
Take Off Cross Wind Limitations ERF
Landing Cross Wind Limitations ERF
Take Off Cross Wind Limitations 8F
Landing Cross Wind Limitations 8F
Reduced Thrust Wet Runway
Both Fixed Derate and Assumed Temp allowed
Reduced Thrust Contaminated Runway
Fixed Derate Only
Min V1 Contaminated RWY
- Check climb performance meets obstacle clearance
- Min V1 not less than FMC V1, Limited by Vmca
Contaminate Limit ERF

- more than 102mm (4inch) Dry snow
Contaminate Limit 8F
- more than 13mm (0.5inch) Slush, Standing Water
- more than 30mm (1.18inch) Wet snow
- more than 130mm (5.12inch) Dry snow
Flaps after Landing
Do not retract past F25
Auto Land on Contaminated RWY considerations
- Reduced XWind Limits
- Rollout Not assured, be prepared to take control on touchdown.
Contaminated RWY Info
Data is based on uniform contaminated rwy. If it is patch it can affect different wheels at different times / rates
