. October 1962, American U2 spyplane captures images of soviet nuclear missile base on cuba
. Some missile sites were nearly finished and could be operational within days (1 week)
-> soviet IRBMs would be within range of many American cities (very alarming)
. JFK forced to react; very difficult reaction - 4 options

. First letter: long personal account for his actions
-> Suggests removal of missiles if US promises never to attack Cuba
. Second letter: changes demands: USA had to withdraw missiles from turkey (NATO ally)

A

. Batista, Cuban dictator, was corrupt & unpopular - opressive police state
. Popular with USA due to opposition to communism
. Cuba dominated by American economic interests, mafia and corruption (people become rich)
. USA appalled; decides that Castro must be removed from power (socialist country next door - threat)

Causes of cuban missile crisis: bay of pigs

A

. Kennedy can’t invade Cuba - unacceptable to allies + community but wants to remove castro
. Arm + train anti-socialist cubans in USA - send them back to Cuba to unstabilise the political situation by rebellions (US not directly involver) - proxy war
-> Kennedy supplies 1,400 soldiers + weapons
. When they landed in ‘bay of pigs’: 20,000 cuban soldiers with tanks waited for them: captures + killed
–> most cuban population didn’t support revolution
