Protection Motivation theory
Helps to understand human responses to fear appeals with two processes: threat appraisal (how serious/severe the situation is) and coping appraisal (response-efficacy and self-efficacy)

Consumers developing knowledge about persuasion tactics and resist or adapt to these attempts

When people feel like their freedom to choose is being restricted, they become motivated to regain freedom by resisting persuasion attempt
Consumer perceptions of sales pressure
When consumer feels overwhelmed by sales pressure, they tend to resist the product or feel negative emotions like anxiety
Consumer advertisement skepticism
Tendency to doubt the truthfulness or motives behind advertisement. Highly skeptical consumers are more resistant to persuasion because its seen as manipulative or misleading
