SEAT BELTS
Under 14 then it it the drivers responsibility
14 and over and then they hold responsibility
Under 1.35 m then a booster seat must be used unless over 12
Seat belt exemptions
- When reversing
- A Qualified instructor supervising a provisional driver reversing
- Police purposes
- Fire brigade
- Persons on crown procession
- Licenced taxi (Hackney carriage) plying for hire, answering a call for hire and carrying passengers
- Private hire drivers (private taxis) ONLY whilst carrying a passenger for hire
- Person holding a medical exemption certificate – Must have it on them
- Disabled person’s belt
- As a result of a steep incline the seatbelt is locked out.
Tyres - general laws
Should be correctly inflated
- No lumps or bulges anywhere
- Ply or cord must not be visible
- Correct size and fit the right type for the vehicle
- Same size and type for each axle
- No cut or breaks in the rubber in excess of 25 mm or 10% of the section width
Tyre tread depth
under 3.5 ton central 3/4 unbroken 1.6 mm
Over 3.5 ton 3/4 of the surface in an unbroken band of 1 mm
MOT Length
Up to 13 Months
MOT Timings
over 3.5 ton or over 8 seats then 1 year
under 3.5 ton 3 years
Driving without an MOT?
Driving to a pre planned appointment
Driving home from a failed MOT to repair the vehicle
MOT Failure categories
Minor - Not a fail
Major - Fail but can be driven away for repair
Dangerous - Must not be moved or used on a public road at any point
Tow Ropes
Distance does not exceed 4.5m(15 feet) and when above 1.5m(5 feet) is easily visible
Windscreen Washers
One or more efficient automated windscreen wipers are required to be fitted so that the driver has an adequate view to the front and to both sides of the vehicle
Fitted on vehicles that achieve more than 20 mph
Silencer
Every vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine shall be fitted with an exhaust system including a silencer AND exhaust cases from the engine shall not pass into the atmosphere without first passing through a silencer
Horn
Instrument capable of giving audible and sufficient warning of the approach or position of the vehicle to which its fitted - Above 20 mph
Regulation 107
Leaving a vehicle unattended (quitting)
It is an offence to leave a motor vehicle unattended on a road if: The engine is not stopped AND the parking break is not set, UNLESS there is somebody present with the vehicle who has a licence to drive that class of vehicle
Regulation 103
Unnecessary Obstruction
No person in charge of a motor vehicle or trailer shall cause or permit the vehicle to stand on a road so as to cause any unnecessary obstruction of the road
