Trapper and explorer, scouted out new hunting grounds for Dakotas and Wyoming. Had his own fur trading company, Mojave Desert into southern California, first explorer to journey the Pacific coastline from California into Oregon

Helped lead an expedition that rediscovered South Pass (key Rocky Mountain passing, part of Oregon Trail) , killed by comanche indians.
