Q

Consequence of Warsaw Pact

A

P- A consequence of the formation of the Warsaw pact was that the world was divided into two defensive alliances.
E- As these alliances were defensive it meant that it meant that a war could easily spark if a member of one of the states were attacked
E- Due to the division tensions decreased as it would be pointless less to attack opposing states as it would only end in a world war and possibly a nuclear war.

Q

consequence 1 of Hungarian uprising

A

P-A consequence of the Hungarian uprising was it prevented future rebellion from the satellite states.
E- Up to 20,000 Hungarians were killed in the uprising and around 200,00 Hungarians fled the country.Hungarian leader Nagy was executed and was replaced by a hard-line communist Janos kadar.
E- This meant that the Soviet-union wasn’t very lenient , and any sort of rebellion resulted with harsh punishment. Therefore this prevented further rebellion as the other satellite states knew the outcome they would face. This increases tensions as the west didn’t agree with how the USSR punished the Hungarians and classed it as abuse

Q

Consequence 2 of Hungarian uprising

A

P-A consequence of the Hungarian uprising was a relatively weak western response.
E- western politicians such as Eisenhower, condemned the soviet invasion and passed a motion in the UN calling the invasion an action against human rights. However no military response was made.
E- This response was weak because western involvement would’ve caused another world war, so to prevent this they remained uninvolved. This reduced tensions as it decreases the chance of a war.

consequence 2 of refugee crisis in Berlin

A

P- A consequence of the refugee problem was the construction of the Berlin Wall
E-After many fled from East to west Germany, Khrushchev had to do something to prevent more from leaving east Germany.
E- This lead to the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, which bordered West Germany and stopped the population from leaving. This however made the USSR look bad as they had to build a wall to stop people from fleeing due to the fact that their communist government was unfavourable.

Consequence 2 of Khrushchevs Berlin Ultimatum

A

P-A consequence to Khrushchevs Berlin ultimatum was meetings made between the leaders to sort out the Berlin crisis.

Q

Consequence 2 of four summits

A

P- A consequence of the Paris summit was the ending of a working relationship between Eisenhower and Khrushchev.
E-Before the Paris summit in May 1960, the USSR’s shot down a US U-2 plane which was claimed to be a weather plane but was actually a spy plane.
E- This meant that the meeting between the two leaders was fuelled by very high tensions. Eisenhower refused to apologise and Khrushchev left the meeting, cutting it short and making it a complete failure due to the disagreements. This ended their working relationship as trust and respect was lost.

Q

Consequence 1 of the Berlin Wall

A

P- A consequence of the construction of the Berlin Wall was the US were able to look strong without starting a war.
E- Neither Eisenhower or Kennedy gave in to Khrushchevs ultimatum to remove western forces from Berlin.
E- This made the US look more powerful as the wall was built without the US giving in and without starting a war and therefore western forces remained in Berlin
This decreased tensions as the building of the wall prevented tensions from boiling over and starting a war.

Q

Consequence 2 of Berlin Wall

A

P- A consequence of the construction of the Berlin Wall was a propaganda victory for the USSR.
E-East Germans created a concrete wall surrounding West Berlin. America didn’t not resist the creation of the wall, although they tested how far they could push the USSR in a stand off at checkpoint Charlie, where the US and Soviet tanks faced off, but both sides withdrew from the stand off later on
E- The lack of resistance made it clear that the West feared the Soviet Union . This increased tensions as the west would be considered weak by other countries
