Consequences of treatment Flashcards
what is the restorative staircase?
the larger a tooth is prepped
prep eases gradually towards the pulp
rather than removing and replacing what can be done?
repair and refurbish
when to repair and refurbish?
pt complaining about aesthetics
no pain
no caries
repair and refurbish dependent upon?
patients wishes, social/medical/dental history, caries risk, if clinical marginal defects exist
how to repair and refurbish?
refinish restoration only, recontour the margin, remove a small part and replace?
how long do restorations last?
amalgam - 10, composite - 8 gi - 3
what is the duration of a restoration determined by?
caries risk, size of cavity, skill of operator
how to secondary caries cause failure?
new caries at margin of restoration, most common reason for replacement, found at gingival aspect
how does tooth wear cause failure?
b/c attrition - of restoration itself
b/c erosion - around restoration
how do pulpal problems cause failure?
periapical pathology on xray, could be a result of initial operative intervention
trauma?
mouthguards - contact sports
fracture?
understand reason for fracture - tooth/ restoration
what is ditching?
occurs in amalgam, due to creep/corrosion, replaced if ditching severe, plaque retentive = secondary caries
how does a defective contact cause failure?
food packing - annoying, proximal area at high caries risk
how do aesthetics lead to replacement?
poor appearance, replace only if cant repair
