Disclosure:
Patient given complete information on dx, prognosis, tx options in understandable terms
Understanding:
Patient fully understands before giving consent
Mental Capacity:
Capacity: ability to understand each alternative tx option and consequences of making specific choice
-Determined by clinician
Voluntariness:
-Patient voluntarily gives consent (no manipulation/coercion)
-Patient affirmed of right to make their own choice
(Respect for Patient Autonomy)
What forms can consent take?
Written, Oral, Implied
What constitutes a minor?
- Under 18yo
- Usually means 14-17yo
When does a minor not require parental consent?
Sex: pregnancy, STDs, family planning services, abortion
Drugs: drug/alcohol addiction/abuse tx
Rock n Roll: emergency/trauma
Who pays for services when parental consent not given?
Minor giving consent becomes financially responsible for associated costs
What is a minor without support?
14-17yo without parent/custodian/legal guardian
What are the requirements for Tx of minor w/out support?
- Minor must understand benefits and risks (give informed consent)
- Services are for minor’s benefit
- Minor is “minor without support”
What is an emancipated minor?
Minor without support, Married, Military

What kind of consent can a parent/guardian give for medical Tx of their minor?
- Oral consent (document it and have 2-person verification!)
- Blanket consent (often is a written consent for all Tx)
