Q

The unconscious

A

sigmund freud

  • awareness of face = activation of face processing areas of brain
  • awareness of house - activation of place processing areas of brain
+ measure what people are aware of at certain times; what about non-attended stimuli

Q

global workplace

A

activity fluctuates spontaneously in binocular rivalry in response to experience (info competes to be broadcast) … want to be part of unitary ACCESS CONSCIOUSNESS

Q

Phenomenological consciousness

A

reps. that don’t reach access consciousness (not reported but still influence behavior, ie. there’s a dog)

– im[licit priming (“good boy”, “bad boy”)

Q

Blindsight

A

damage to visual cortex - blind spot in corresponding part of visual field, yet still “aware” of object (ie. woman w carbon monoxide poisoning = “blind”)

Q

2 visual systems

A

both process info about structure of objects & spacial locations but use info in diff. ways

VENTRAL STREAM: perceptual representations of enduring characteristics (identification & relationships) - conscious of it

DORSAL STREAM: moment-to-moment info about location & disposition of objects; mediates visual control of skilled actions directed at those objects (NOt conscious of it)

Q

Sleep & replay

A

maze running; singing

awaken to name more likely than other sounds (greater activation in mid-temporal gyrus & orbitofrontal cortex)

NULL EFFECTS OF CONSCIOUSNESS

A

some parts of brain unaffected by our consciousness processes; ie. visual illusions - look at some aspect & cannot not pay attention to it
- consciousness not talking to perceptive machinery

Q

phantom limb

A

illusion of both arms present, during pain in missing limb, open & close hands - hand “permanently clenched” feeling - eliminate pain by means of visual illusion that remaps cortical areas associated w/limb

Q

Perception

A

animals thinking of themselves as another animal:

chimp
kitty
tamarin
elephant - touching spot
bird - not aggressive, but rather eploratory w/mirror image vs. another bird (mark removal)
