Consciousness Flashcards
What is Consciousness?
Consciousness is the state of awareness of the self and environment, and responsiveness to external stimulation and inner need.
Name the levels of Consciousness
Alert, Drowsy, Stupor, Coma and Deep Coma
What area of the brain did Koch et al (2016) argue was important for Consciousness?
Posterior Cortical
What is Neural Correlates of Consciousness?
A specific pattern of brain activity that correlates with particular conscious experience.
What are two examples of Neural Correlates of Consciousness methods?
Binocular Rivalry and Bi-Stable Perception
What is Binocular Rivalry?
Competition for visual awareness
What is blind sight?
Occipital lobe damage which causes a person to be blind.
Name two pathways and brain regions in Milner & Goodale’s (995) model of visual processing.
Ventral and Dorsal Stream and Posterior Parietal Cortex and Inferotemporal Cortex.
What is visual neglect?
Damaged to the parietal cortex which can lead to a deficit in visual consciousness.
Name three disorders caused by damage to brain regions in the Neural Correlates of Consciousness.
Achromatopsia (colour awareness), Akinetopsia (movment) and Prosopagnosia (unable to recognise faces).
