Consciousness Flashcards
Consciousness
our awareness of ourselves and our environments
Stage 1 of sleep
Kind of awake and kind of asleep.
stage 2 of sleep
Waves that get progressively slower.
Sleep spindles
short outburst of rapid brain waves
- occurs in stage 2
Stage 3 and 4
-Slow wave sleep.
if woken up in stage 3 and 4
you will be very groggy
brain wave speed
From stage 4, your brain begins to speed up and you go to stage 3, then 2, then 1
REM Sleep (Rapid eye movement)
- dream state
- Body is paralyzed
Alpha waves
slow waves of a relaxed, awake brain
Delta waves
large, slow waves of deep sleep
Hallucinations
false sensory experiences
Sleep deprivation
Sleep loss
Sleep deprivation effects
fatigue
impaired concentration
immune suppression
irritability
slowed performance
accidents
Insomnia
Persistent problems falling asleep
Narcolepsy
suffer from sleeplessness and may fall asleep at unpredictable or inappropriate times
-Directly into REM sleep
Sleep apnea
A person stops breathing during their sleep.
-common especially in heavy males.
Night terrors
Wake up screaming and have no idea why, high arousal and appearance of being terrified.
-Most common in young (boys) 2-8
Somnambulism
Sleep walking
-occurs during stage 4
REM behavior Disorder
Affects men 40+
Are not paralyzed during REM sleep and therefore act out their dreams. (dangerous)
Freud’s theory of dreams (phsychoanalysis)
Dreams are a roadway into our unconscious: wish fulfillment.
Activation-synthesis theory
Our Cerebral Cortex is trying to interpret random electrical activity we have while sleeping
-That is why dreams sometimes make no sense
information-processing theory
-Dreams are a way to deal with the stresses of everyday life
- We tend to dream more when we are more stressed
Role theory
Hypnosis is NOT an altered state of consciousness.
State theory
Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness
Dissociation theory
- by Ernest Hilgard
We voluntarily divide our consciousness up
Psychoactive drugs
drugs that are small enough to pass through blood-brain barrier
Stimulates
Speed up body processes.
-increase dopamine
(ex.Cocaine)
Depressant
Slows down body processes
-Alcohol
Hallucinogen
Causes change in perception of reality
LSD, Mushrooms, Mary J
hallucinogen can cause
Memory Loss
Attention Deficits
Impaired Learning Ability
Opiate
depressive and hallucinogenic qualities
ex. Morphine, heroin, methadone and codeine
Ecstasy
functions as a stimulant and hallucinogen.
-MDMA
Ecstasy can cause increase levels of
serotonin
Norepinephrine
Dopamine
