connective tissue : cartilage Flashcards
what are the three types of cartilages?
Hyaline cartilage (end of bones)
fibrocartilage( discs in spine)
elastics cartilage(ears)
what is the main function. of a hyaline cartilage
-covers the articular surfaces at joints
-reduces friction
-absorbs shock
what are the features of a hyaline cartilage?
-they contain chondrocytes(cells)
-Contains ground substance which is gel like with fine collagen fibres
where is fibrocatilage located ?
forms rings and pics between joints-e.g spinal discs
what are some properties of fibro cartilage?
-resists considerable pressure
-great strength, some elasticity
what’s are the features of fibrocartilage?
-contains chondrocyte
-matrix -bundles of thick collagen fibres and gives strength
list examples of fibrocartilage
- Acetabular Labrum (hip)
-menisci in knee
-intervertebral disc
