Connective and Adipose Tissue Flashcards
What are the functions of connective tissue?
CONNECTS: form tissues, organs, TRANSPORTS: medium for diffusion of nutrients/wastes, PROTECTS: cushion between, insulation, STORAGE: adipose, DEFENCE: against infection, WOUND HEALING: fibroblasts
What is collagen?
Fibre: is the most abundant: strength, 28 types, type 1 is a triple helix of α chains
What cells are in CT proper?
mesenchymal, fibroblasts, macrophage, mast
What is connective tissue made of?
cells, fibres, ground substance
Name the fibres in CT
collagen, reticular, elastin
What is ground substance and it purpose?
Proteoglycans + GAGs + hyaluronic acid = Watery, rubbery, fills in space between cells, protection
Name the types of loose and dense CT
Loose: areola, adipose, reticular. Dense: regular, irregular
What is an Aponeurosis?
flat sheet of regular CT, bundles of fibres in one layer, often at 90° to those adjacent levels
List the wondering cells in loose CT
WBC, plasma cells, macrophages
The extracellular matrix is made up of what?
ground substance (proteoglycans + GAGs + hyaluronic acid) + fibres = outside the cell proving structural and biochemical support to surrounding cells
What is white adipose tissue?
Unilocular: adipose cells filled by single fat droplet, fuel reserve, Insulation, shock absorption
List the fixed cells in loose CT
melanocytes, macrophages, mast cells, fibroblasts, adipocytes
What is a mast cell?
contain histamine (increase blood vessel permeability), heparin (anticoag)
What is brown adipose tissue?
mutilocular: adipose cells filled with multiple lipid droplets and a nucleus, found close to scapula, sternum, especially in new-born, brown colour due to vast vascular supply and abundant mitochondria
What is a melanocyte?
mature melanin-forming cell, especially in the skin
