Conn's syndrome Flashcards
1
Q
what is ‘conn’s syndrome’
A
- excess production of aldosterone hormone
- at the adrenal cortex
- due to adrenal hyperplasia / adrena adenoma
2
Q
causes of conn’s syndrome?
A
- adrenal hyperplasia
2. adrenal adenoma
3
Q
conn’s syndrome pathophysiology : ‘hypokalaemia’
A
- increased Na/K+ channel use
- increased absorbtion of Na+
- increased secretion of K+
4
Q
conn’s syndrome pathophysiology : ‘ hypernatremia and hypertension ‘
A
- increased Na+ reabsorbtion
- increased water reabsortion
- hpt
5
Q
conn’s syndrome pathophsyiology :
‘metabolic alkalosis’
A
hypokalemia caused metabolic alkalosis
- K+ inside cell exchanged for H+ outside cell to maintain K+ balance
- Increased H+ in kidney to enable increased K+ reabsorbtion
6
Q
conn’s syndrome pathophysiology : ‘diabetes insipidus’
A
- hypokalaemia
- desensitisation of renal tubule to ADH
- polyuria and polydipsia
7
Q
Clincial features
A
- 2nd hypertension
- Hypokalaemic symptoms
- fatigue
- muscle weakness
- headaches
