Conjunctival Melanoma Flashcards
What is conjunctival melanoma?
= Cancer of melanocytes of the conjunctiva (Can arise from pre-existing neavus, primary acquired melanosis)
Presentation of conjunctival melanocytes?
- Early 50’s
- Caucasian
- Unilateral
- Aggressive
What are the two appearances of conjunctrival melanoma?
- Raised black/grey nodule with dilated feeder vessels
OR - Amelenotic Lesion: pink/flesh colour, smooth (may extend to limbus, immobile, elevation)
What is the management/treatment?
EMERGENCY SAME DAY REFERRAL TO OP
Treatment = surgical enucleation as it can spread to brain lungs or liver.
Conjunctival melanoma
presentation of conjunctival naveus
-benign
-bilateral
-near limbus
presents within first 2 decades
-moves freely over sclera
-may/may not grow small amount over time
What is the differential diagnosis of conjunctival melanoma
-conj naevvus
-primary acquired melanosis
-conj epithelial melanosis
ocular melanosis
What are signs a conjunctival naves is malignant?
-growth at limbus
change in pigmentation over time
-elevation
-vascularity(feeder vessels)
-unusual location ( palpebral or forniceal conjunctiva
signs of primary acquired melanosis (PAM)
-iiregular,flat or multifocal area of comjunctiaval epithelial pigmentation
-involves inferior or superior fornices
-moves freely over sclera
-pre malign= devopment of nodules on flat lesion
document and monitor

Signs and presentation of conjunctival epithelial melanosis
racial melanosis
-benign
dark skin
bilateral
flat patchy brown pigmentation scattered through conj
around/mor intense at limbus
moves freely over scleral surface
not grow or change
What is the presentation of ocular melanocytosis
-congenital
slate grey pigmenation
within episclera
immobile
