Conjunctiva Flashcards
Definition
Conjunctiva is a translucent mucous membrane which lines the posterior surface of the eyelids and anterior aspect of the eyeball
Parts of conjunctiva
Palpebral conjunctiva- marginal, tarsal and orbital
Bulbar conjunctiva
Conjunctival fornix
Structure
Epithelium
Adenoid layer
Fibrous layer
Glands
Mucin secreting glands-
goblet cells
Crypts of Henle
Glands of Manz
Accessory lacrimal glands-
Glands of Krause
Glands of Wolfring
Arteries
Derived from three sources:
Peripheral arterial arcade of the eyelid
Marginal arcade of the eyelid
Anterior ciliary arteries
Veins
Veins from conjunctiva drain into the venous plexus of eyelids and some around the cornea into the anterior ciliary veins
Lymphatics
Lateral side- preauricular LN
Medial side- submandibular LN
Nerve supply
Circumcorneal zone of conjunctiva- branches from long ciliary nerve which supply the cornea
Rest of the conjunctiva- branches from lacrimal, infratrochlear, supratrochlear, supraorbital and frontal nerves
