What are subcommittees?
Committees that specializes in a subcategory of its standing committee’s responsibility.
What are standing committees?
Permanent groups to oversee bills that deal with certain kinds of issues.
What are select committees?
Temporary committees that study one specific issue.
What are joint committees?
Committees made up from members of both the House and the Senate.
What do joint committees normally do?
Act as study groups with the responsibility for reporting their findings back to the House and the Senate.
What is a conference committee?
A temporary committee that is set up when the House and Senate have passed different versions of the same bill.
How are members assigned to committees?
Political parties assign members to standing committees.
What is the seniority system?
An unwritten rule that gave the member of the majority party with the longest service to a certain committee the leadership of that committee.
