Congestive Heat Failure Classifications Flashcards
Reduced cardiac contractility
Systolic Heart Failure
- Impaired cardiac relaxation
- Abnormal ventricular filling
Diastolic Heart Failure
- Most common cause of CHF (60%)
- Result of end-stage coronary artery disease, either with a history of MI or with a chronically underperfused, yet viable myocardium
LV Systolic Dysfunction
- Chronic hypertension OR ischemic heart disease
- Other causes: restrictive, infiltrative, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathies
Diastolic LV Dysfunction
Emphasize the role of elevated cardiac filling pressures, and, thus, venous congestion (damming up of blood behind the failing ventricle)
Backward Failure
Mainfestations caused by decreased CO of the failing ventricle and, thus, inadequate organ perfusion
Forward Failure
What are the most common symptoms of Left-Sided Failure?
- Dyspnea
- Orthopnea
- Paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea
- Cough
- Hemoptysis
What are the most common signs of Right-Sided Failure?
- Jugular venous distention
- Enlarged and tender liver and spleen
- Acites
- Peripheral Edema
Most clinical manifestations of right-sided failure are caused by left-sided failure, but what is another important cause?
Cor pulmonale - RV enlargment due to pulmonary hypertension
