Usually asymtpomatic
What can CMV cause in neonates?

How does a baby develop congenital CMV?
If the mother has CMV during pregnancy either as a first time infection or after a previous infection
How is the CMV passed to the unborn baby?
Via the placenta
How can CMV be transmitted postnatally?
Through breast milk or saliva
What signs of congenital CMV may be present at birth?
- Rash
- Jaundice
- Microcephaly
- IUGR
- Hepatosplenomegaly
- Seizures
- Retinitis
How is diagnosis of congenital CMV made?
PCR amplification of viral DNA
What samples can be used for PCR?
- Amniotic fluid
- Fetal blood
- Infants blood, urine, CSF, saliva
What are the differentials for congenital CMV?
Other congenital infections
What is the management for congenital CMV?
Antiviral therapy with oral valganciclovir for 6 months
What has 6 months of valganciclovir been shown to do?
Improve hearing and neurodevelopmental outcomes
