What is conformity?
A change in behaviour or opinions as a result of real or imagined pressure from a person or group
What are the 3 types of conformity?
INTERNALISATION
IDENTIFICATION
COMPLIANCE
What is internalisation?
When a person genuinely believes a group norm both publicly and privately
What is identification?
Conforming to a norm as you value that group - believing it publicly not privately
What is compliance?
Changing behaviour to simply fit in with a group or rules - changing those beliefs as soon as you’re away from that group
What is normative social influence?
Agreeing with the opinion of the majority to gain social approval - a public process, not private
What sort of process is normative social influence?
A public, emotional one
What does normative social influence explain?
Identification and compliance
What is informational social influence?
Agreeing with the opinion of the majority due to uncertainty and wishing to be ‘correct’ as you believe they are - a public and private process
What sort of process is informational social influence?
A public & private, cognitive one
