Conformity
Maintaining or changing one’s behavior due to the real or imagined influence of others.
Informational Social Influence
The influence of other people that leads us to conform because we see them as a source of information to guide our behavior.
AUTOKINETIC EFFECT STUDY (SHERIF, 1936)
Autokinetic effect- participants look @ a light and watch as it moves. They have to see how many times it moves the result all varies in length short, long, and varied light length
ASCH CONFORMITY EXPERIMENT STUDY
Asch conformity experiment- length of line participants group of men there are confederate who choose wrong answers everyone would follow even if it were wrong (submitted to group pressure)
PUBLIC COMPLIANCE
Conforming to other people’s behavior publicly without necessarily believing in what the other people are doing or saying
NORMATIVE SOCIAL INFLUENCE
The influence of other people that leads us to conform in order to be liked and accepted by them.People Questioned themselves.
PRIVATE ACCEPTANCE
Conforming to other people’s behaviors out of genuine belief that what they are doing or saying is right
SOCIAL IMPACT THEORY
The idea that likelihood of conformity can be predicted by 3 factors
- The importance of group
- The immediacy of the group
- The number of people in the group
- The magic#3 will conform
CONTAGION
The rapid spread of emotions or behaviors through a crowd
DESCRIPTIVE NORMS
People’s perceptions of how people actually behave in given situations (people doing)
INJUNCTIVE NORMS
People’s perception of how one should appropriately behave (people thinking)
MASS PSYCHOGENIC ILLNESS
The occurrence in a group of people of similar physical symptoms with no known physical cause
SOCIAL NORMS
The implicit or explicit rules a group has for the acceptable behaviors, values, and beliefs of its members
