Conformity
A change in behavior or belief as the result of real or imagines group pressure
Informational social influence
Conformity occurring when people accept evidence about reality provided by other people
We use other people as a source of information to guide our behavior
Typically in the case of ambiguous events where we are unsure of the correct response.
Normative Social Influence
Conformity based on a persons desire to fulfill others expectations, often to gain acceptance.
When do people conform using normative social influence?
When the group size is three or more
When the group is important
When the group is unanimous

Minority Social Influence
People in the minority have a difficult time using normative social influence
Minorities can introduce new information to help influence people
Must maintain a consistent position across time
Must maintain a consistent position among members
Injunctive norms
Perceptions of what behaviors are approved or disapproved by others
Descriptive norms
Perceptions of how people actually behave in situations(regardless of injunctive norms).
