Attitudes
A favorable or unfavorable evaluative reaction towards someone or something
Why do we have Attitudes?
Knowledge- Attitudes gives us knowledge; help us navigate things more quickly
Value-Expressive- with my attitudes, express morals/views about the world
Ego-Defensive
Social adjustive- If we are aware of our attitude, it helps us socially and helps us fit in to our groups.
Implicit Attitudes
Unconscious evaluation of an object measured by response latency
Explicit Attitudes
Conscious evaluation of an object measured by self-report
How do attitudes form?
Affect (Feelings)
Behavior(Tendency’s/how you behave)
Cognition(Thoughts)
When attitudes DO predict behavior
- When social influences on what we say are minimal
- When other influences on behavior are minimal
- When attitudes specific to the behavior are examined
- When behavorial intentions are measured
- When the attitude is potent
When attitudes DONT predict behavior
- ) Moral hypocrisy- Wanting to appear moral while avoiding the cost of being moral

- ) We may measure attitudes towards things that don’t map on to behaviors
