A

→when a person genuinly accepts a groups norms →has the same public and private views
→more permanent change of opinion

→conforming to a groups opinion/ behaviour because there is something about the group you value
→identifying with the group because you want to be a part of it
→change public opinions to fit in but private views may stay the same

→ who has the better information, everyone else will follow this opinion, they’re seen as a expert
→people do so bc they want to be right all the time
→cognitive process
→in new situations, times of ambiguity and uncertainty

→ about the norms/ normal behaviours of a social group
→ppl want to avoid rejection and gain social approval
→emotional process
→most likely to occur when meeting a stranger to set a good impression or in stressful situations when theres a greater need for social support.

•what research supports ISI?

A

•Lucas et al
asked students some easy and hard maths questions ad found that there was greater conformity to incorrect answers when they were harder rather then the easy ones
suggesting ppl conform when they dont know the answer. we copy those we perceive to be knowledgable and right

•what are the individual differences?

A
  • research suggests NSI doesn’t effect everyone behaviour in the same way e.g those less concerned about being liked are less effected by NSI
  • these ppl are known as afilliators as they have a need for being in a relationship with others
