Classical liberals think that human society predates the state, whereas all liberals see society as a collection of diverse and potentially autonomous individuals
Rawls believes that modern urban societies are those where individuals are less autonomous and therefore require state support to be free
Neo -liberals see society as a dependency culture and want a radical reduction in the state

Classical liberals like mill believe that state intervention should be minimal and individuals left unchecked
Modern liberals like Friedan believe that state intervention should be much more extensive so as to “enable” individuals to reach their potential .
What are the conflicts in liberalism over the economy?
Classical and neo-liberals support Adam smiths ideas based on private enterprise, modern liberals have more sympathy of Keynesian economics as a managed economy can repel the negative effects of market forces
