Ethnicity
relates specifically to conflicts of racial supremacy or genocide (Rwanda)
Culture
differences can cause conflict, separatist debates
Resources
territory, often a point of content between nations and groups, necessity for both
Ideology
between communism and democracy
Insurrection
violent uprising against an authority or government
Millennium development goals
1) eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2) achieve universal primary education
3) promote gender equality and empower women
4) reduce child mortality
5) improve maternal health
6) combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other
7) ensure environmental sustainability
8) develop global partnership for development
Housing issues
- initial immigration tends to concentrate in areas of poor housing and multi-occupancy common.
- lower rate of owner-occupancy
- more wealth or subsequent generations of immigrants have moved to the suburbs
geographical segregation often apparent
Educational issues
- 2007, 22% of primary & 18% of secondary pupils at state schools, from ethic minority families
- large influx of pupils with English as an additional language (EAL)many need extra support
there are variations in the education attainment of pupils from different ethnic backgrounds
Healthcare issues
- Many ethnic groups live in inner city areas, high levels of transmittable and communicable diseases
- there is sometimes a lower take up of immunisation, risk of certain diseases, TB
- significant influx of new immigrants can put strain on healthcare resources.
Religion issues
- where migrants follow different beliefs, there can be friction when celebration festivals (impacts employment hours.)
- certain religions doctrines require strict adhere to ways of living, can inhibit employment and restrict mixing in societies (ghettoization)
Economic issues
- migration is often less welcome in times of economic depression
- migrations account for 1/8 of the UK’s working-age population, providing a huge boost tot he economy
- there may be resentment amongst local population if they perceive migrations as willing to work for lower wages/longer hours.
Social issues
- negative views of migration from media can fuel resentment and discontent.
- ‘race riots’ occur, Blackburn, Birmingham and old ham experiencing racial discontent since 2001
