Conflict resolution Flashcards
If PT refer Pt to an orthotist who is the PT’s friend and expertise in the service that the Pt is seeking
Conflict of interest:
- The Pt could preceive that the PT is referring to the orthotist on the basis that they are friends, rather than it being in their best interest
Can actions be justified?
- No! Further actions would be needed to justify the PT’s referral to the orthotist who is also their friend
Discuss alternative:
- Provide a list
- Should disclose to the Pt about their relationship, reason of recommanding them (special interest in soccer players, benefit Pt as Pt also soccer players)
Private clinic: offer referral bonus for PT in hospital
Connection between the person:
Clinic owner- influence the PT in the rehab facility of the hospital
PT in rehab hospital- influence over their Pt as they are a trusted person in their care plan
Conflict of interest:
- PT must not give any benefit to another person/receive any benefit from another person for a Pt referral

How to structure your pracitce to avoid perceived or real conflicts of interest?
all of my decisions are
-made in the Pt’s best interest and with the Pt’s full knowledge
-made on behalf of the Pt, regardless of who is paying for Rx
-made without the incentive of financial gain
-Only recommend products and service that are clinically indicated
-My professional decision do not result in a benefit to me/someone I know

This is a conflict of interest
- Giving a benefit to someone for financial gain
- PT should avoid conflicts of interest, or the appearance of conflict of interest, between their personal financial/social media interests and the best interests of their Pts
Ask Pt to leave a review?
Yes. PT can request a review/rating from a Pt (on any social media platform) as long as…
- Pt not being compensated for leaving a review
- Pt not being forced to leave a review/positive review
Pt fully recovered, want to continue PT services
Issue
- Pt would like to continue services which are no longer necessary
alternative
- Educate the Pt that PT services are no longer required as they have achieve all the goals setted and sucessfully return to function
- Highlight the progress that has been made and provide the Pt with a HEP to maintain their ROM and strength
Agree on an action and document
- discussions, plan of action, decision to DC the Pt
