A
- Casts out merchants - priests were making money off goods sold in temple
- Quotes Isiah - Speaking like a messiah + insulted priests by using scripture against them
- All nations - including Gentiles, insulted Jews as they believed they were God’s chosen people
- Calls them thieves - insult, reference to Jeremiah

A
- Didn’t fulfil crowd’s expectation of overthrowing Romans - conflict with crowd
- Welcomed by crowds, authorities worried he would lead a rebellion
- Crowds cried “Hosanna” (“save us”) - threat to Romans
- Rode in like a conquering king
- Believed Messiah - threatened religious authorities

A
- Avoided telling people not to pay taxes - would have encouraged lawbreaking
- Avoided trap w/o saying he didn’t know - would have discredited him as a teacher
- Avoided telling explicitly to pay taxes - blasphemy
- Important to pay taxes to support society

- Just because we disagree with authorities, shouldn’t necessarily disobey them, can’t do any good in jail
- Part of “give to Cesar what is Cesar”
- If aren’t obeyed, could lead to anarchy
- St. Paul said to obey authorities

- Jesus disobeyed authorities when went against his beliefs
- May be an unfair trial such as Sanhedrin
- Jesus disobeyed authorities over trading in the temple - he knew something was wrong and righted it

- Meeting people’s needs > following religious laws
- Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath
- Were only paying lip-service to God
