What is a sacrament?

What is Confirmation?
Confirmation is the sacrament in which the Holy Spirit comes to us in a special way and enables us to witness Jesus Christ in both word and in deed
Who is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is the third person person of the Blessed Trinity, equal to God the father and God the son.
How does the Holy Spirit come to us in Confirmation?
Through the laying of the hands and anointing by the bishop who has the power to bestow the sacrament by being a successor to the apostles
How does the Bishop confirm?
He lays his hands over those to be confirmed prays a special prayer and anoints the fore head with chrism oil in the form of a cross
When did the apostles receive this outpouring of the Holy Spirit?

The apostles were in a locked room and all of a sudden fire appeared above their heads and they could speak different languages to go out and teach about Jesus Christ
What is chrism?
Oil made of olive oil and balm, blessed by the bishop on holy Thursday, a sign of strength to the church, and also used in baptism and holy orders
What does the bishop say as he anoints the forehead with chrism?
Be sealed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, to which we answer Amen.
What is the purpose of the sign of peace which follows the anointing?
The sign of peace signifies our communion with the bishop and with all the faithful of the body of Christ
Why does the bishop anoint the forehead with chrism in the form of a cross?
To remind is that we must openly profess our faith, never be ashamed of it, and if necessary be ready to die rather than deny it.
What are the effects of the Sacrament of Confirmation?
Confirmation completes our initiation into the Body of Christ, roots us more deeply in the life of the Father and Jesus Christ, increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us, and gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirt to spread and defend our faith.
How often may Confirmation be received?
Like Baptism and Holy orders, it is only received once. It imprints on the soul a spiritual character or quality which can never be removed
Should all Catholics be confirmed?
Yes. In order to be strengthened against the dangers of our faith and to be better prepared to live their commitment into the body of Christ.
How should we prepare to receive Confirmation?
By living more faithfully, seeking ways to serve others, study more diligently the mysteries of our faith and the purpose and effects of the sacrament
Why are there sponsors at Confirmation?
To companion the candidate for the sacrament, present the candidate to the bishop, and continue to support the confirmed in the practice of their catholic faith.
What are the requirements to be a sponsor?
- Sponsors must be 16 years old
- Confirmed Catholics who actively practice their faith
- Able to accept the duties of a sponsor
