Confined Space Operations Flashcards
What hazards make a permit required confined space ?
Contains or has potential to containable hazardous atmosphere
Contains material that could potentially engulf a person
Is shaped in a way that a person could be caught or asphyxiated
Contains any recognized serious health or safety hazard 1.2.1
What is a confined space?
Not designed for continuos human occupancy;and large enough and so configured that a person can enter and perform work; and has limited means of entry and escape. TB CSO 1.1
What are three types of atmospheric hazards?
Asphyxiant, toxic, explosive. Atmospheric hazards are the most deadly accounting for almost 65%of all confined space deaths.
When entering a confined space all members must?
All members enter confined space MUST be breathing air from SCBA at all times, until the atmosphere is verified safe! 2.1
What is the only way to detect a lack of oxygen?
The only safe way to detect a lack of oxygen is through the use of an oxygen meter carried by Rescue companies and Hazmat 2.1.1
What shall member do to protect them against oxygen deficient atmosphere ?
The use of the SCBA will protect the wearer against an oxygen deficient atmosphere. 2.1.1
Treat every confined space as a deadly atmosphere until?
Proven otherwise by verified by meter readings. 2.1.5
Some confined spaces may have built in ladder that maybe deteriorated. Members should?
Use FD ladders if conditions permit. Members should also be protected against sudden falling by tying off their life line around a substantial object to allow them to be lowered into the space. They should remain attracted to this life line at all times. 2.2.2
A rescuer should know what before entering a confined space?
Hazards within space, including signs of danger symptoms of exposure, how to escape, how to communicate with attendant outside, how to use equipment needed, first aid/CPR 3.1.1
What is the job of the SCBA control timer?
The SCBA control timer should ensure that each member has a full SCBA cylinder for entry and write down the time that each member dons their face piece. 4.2
Each member entering a confined space MUST?
Be secured in a bowline on a bight and a slippery hitch to a life saving rope. 4.3
Why should members operating in a confined space remain attached to the lifeline?
The purpose of the life saving rope is to allow members outside to remove an overcome rescuer if conditions deteriorate. 4.3
What is the preferred high point anchor?
Tower ladder is preferred due to its greater weight support capacity 88lbs compared to only 250lbs for an Ariel
Aerial/ TL shall NEVER be used as a crane
No one at turntable engine off 4.4
Use of a resuscitator shall never be used
True or false.
False
use of a resuscitator may not be possible and requires careful evaluation prior to use. 5.3
