List 5 factors leading to confederation
- Colonies needed railroads and $ for it, joining a confederation would make it easier to afford
- reciprocity treaty ended. USA no longer allowed free trade
- expansionism by the USA. Usa bought Alaska from Russia. Feared the idea of USA taking over all Canadian territory
- Britain no longer wanted to financially support the bna colonies. With education,defence, and health care.
- “Political deadlock” Canada east and west required more input for government decisions
List 3 provinces of when they joined the confederation and two reasons
British Colombia(1871) - needed money for rail road and protection from USA
P.E.I(1873) - bankrupt and needed money for railroads and bridges
Alberta/Saskatchewan(1905)- organized government and for police force ( northwest mounted police or rcmp)
What role did Chinese workers play in the building of the CPR
- Chinese immigrants came to Canada to make $ and a new life bc of over crowding/over population in China
- Chinese provided workers in the building of Canada’s railroad. Doing dangerous and difficult jobs for low pay
Give two examples of racism in Canadian immigration policy during the Sir Wilfred Laurier era?
- 1200$ “Head tax” on any Asian person wanting to immigrate to Canada
- in order to immigrate to Canada you must come from a similar climate, for example the Middle East, Asian, and African countries
What conditions had to be met in order for someone to purchase a quarter section of land under the homestead act?
- 10$ administration fee
- must be male and at least 21 years old
- must build a permanent dwelling within 3 years
- cultivate at least 49 acres
Describe life on the prairie for early settlers. Discuss the climate, settlers homes, and the hardships they faced?
- Cold for 7 months
- lack of resources such as lumber
- lack of medical care
- live in mud or sod house with a thatched roof, until you had enough $ to by lumber
- school were difficult to get to
- land was very difficult to plow (horse and plow)
What government actions were forced on the native peoples of the prairies before the west was opened up for the European settlement? Why did the native peoples accept such actions?
- First Nations were given reserved lands
- children were put in residential schools
- was made illegal to wear traditional clothing off of the reserve or to celebrate traditional events such as powwows and potlatches
- they accepted it bc of lack of understanding due to language and cultural barriers
- they were promised education,healthcare, and to be taught how to farm
