Conduction Concection Radiation Flashcards
What is conduction
Vibrating particles transfer energy to neighbouring particles
Why does conduction happen mainly in solids
Particles in solid are held together really closely meaning there is lots of collisions to pass on energy
What is thermal conductivity
How well objects transfer energy by conduction
Do metals have a high or low thermal conductivity
High
Do fluids have a low or high thermal conductivity
Low
Do plastics have a high or low thermal conductivity
Low (use them as insulators)
Where does convection occur
In fluids
Explain convection current
Particles heated up become less dense then rise to top and cool ones ant the bottom heat up then rise and it repeats
How do you reduce convection
Stop the free flow of fluids
What do conduction and convection have in common
Both involve particles gaining kinetic energy
What do particles in convection do
They move
The hotter the object is (radiation)
More radiation
