Conducting anaesthesia Flashcards
What are the 4 stages of general anaesthesia?
Induction
Maintenance
Emergence
Recovery
Which measures must be monitored before GA is given?
ECG Oxygen saturation NIBP End tidal CO2 Airway pressure
Why do we give supplemental oxygen?
Increase time to desaturation
Reduced Functional Residual Capacity under anaesthesia
What are some common analgesics for GA?
Fentanyl
Alfentanil
What are some common hypnotics for GA?
Propofol
Thiopentone
Ketamine
What is a Guedel airway?
AKA oropharyngeal airway
Airway adjunct used to maintain a patent airway. The airway prevents the tongue from obstructing the airway
What is the difference between laryngeal mask airway and endotracheal tube?
LMAs are less invasive, decrease airway trauma, decrease neck mobility requirements, and have a reduced risk of laryngospasm and bronchospasm
Does blood pressure normally rise or fall under anaesthesia?
Fall
What are some reasons to intubate?
Protection from aspiration Need for muscle relaxation Shared airway Need for tight C02 control Minimal access to patient
What are some of the biggest risks we work to prevent with anaesthesia?
Awareness Eye trauma Hypothermia Pressure injury Nerve injury Thromboembolism
What are the main factors controlled for anaesthetic maintenance?
Vapour ("gas") Intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA)
What are some documentational responsibilities of the anaesthetist?
Prescription record
Observation chart
Ventilation chart
Fluid balance
What are the main things done for “emergence”?
Signed out of theatre
Reverse NM blockade
Anaesthetic agent stopped
Transfer to recovery room
