Conditions Needed For Tropical Storm Flashcards
Name 6 conditions needed
Ocean temp 27 degrees Ocean temp 70m+ 5-20 degrees north/ south of equator Low level air convergence Atmospheric instability Latent heat / moisture supply
Ocean temp 27 degrees
Provides continuous source of heat and moisture in order to maintain rising air currents.
Ocean depth 70m
This moisture provides latent heat, rising air causes moisture to be released by condensation which drives system
5-20 degrees north / south of equator
In order for the Coriolis Effect to bring about maximum rotation of air.
Coriolis effect is weak at equator and will stop circulation air flow from developing
Low level convergence air
Winds have to come together near the centre of the Low pressure system it contributes to rotation.
Atmospheric instability
Rapid outflow of air in upper atmospheric circulation pushed away warm air which has risen close to centre of storm
Latent heat / moisture supply
TRS exists when there is a supply of latent heat / moisture it provides energy and low frictional drag on ocean surface to gain more speed
Hits land it slows
