Conditions in the trenches Flashcards
What is shell shock?
Mental health condition. Caused by soldiers being so frightened of constant explosions going on around them. Some soldiers were shot by peers for being ‘cowardly’ (if they refused to go over the top of no man’s land)
What is trench foot?
Incredibly common. Caused by soldiers not taking off their boots. Feet became blistered, losing feelings in nerves, sometimes needing to be amputated.
How were soldiers infected with lice?
Lack of washing facilities. Cramped conditions, quick spread.
How were diseases spread?
Dead bodies and food rations attracted rats into trenches, who could bite soldiers and spread diseases.
How were trenches like?( not conditions)
About 2 metres deep. wooden supports in either side. Dug out where soldiers could rest. Area between enemy trenches was called no man’s land.
