What is endogenous obesity?
Occurs with endocrine or metabolic conditions; ultimately when basal metabolic activity level is affected
What is exogenous obesity?
Weight gain when caloric intake exceeps caloric expenditure and occurs with overeating/insufficient activity
What is the cause of endogenous obesity?
Hypothyroidism or Cushings Disease
Endogenous vs. exogenous obesity appearance?
- Exogenous- overal obese appearance body and extremeties
- Endogenous- obesity targetted more in body then extremeties
What may be the cause of rapid weight gain in a few days?
Rapid weight gain in just a matter of a few days may be the result of excessive body fluid retention known as “edema.”
Name and describe one type of edema.
Anasarca- generalized swelling of tissues due to “effusion” of fliud into “extracellular” space
What is ascites?
It is fluid within the peritoneal cavity (tissue space between organs and abdominal wall)
What are the symptoms of ascites?
Patient will complain of stomach heaviness and shortness of breath due to impingement on diaghram.
What is clinically considered significant weight loss?
5% or more over 6 month period or >10% in year
What is the weight change calculation?
[(usual weight-current weight)/usual wt.] * 100
What is defective absorption of nutrients in GI tract?
Any disorder of GI tract that affects digestion or absorption
What does weight loss with a relatively high food intake suggest?
diabetes mellitus 1, hyperthyroidism, or malabsorption syndromes
