conceptual modelling Flashcards

1
Q

what is conceptual modelling

A

> Concept models originates in the mind and its primary purpose is to outline the principles and basic functions of a design system

> the idea developed in the mind needs to be communicated to those around us. The intangible has to be made tangible. Often to the designer itself, concept modelling takes an important role to understand the idea better.

> Concept modelling helps to assists their understanding by simulating the subject matter the idea represents

Q

Setting objectives

A
  • important to have objectives set before the start of the concept modelling process
  • Poorly defined objectives lead to overly complex, inaccurate models or models that do not assist in the design process
  • This will result in the right kind of concept model chosen, For example if the aim is to study the form and aesthetics of a phone model, a designer might stat out with an aesthetic model of a phone is non-functional
  • Concept modelling is one of the early steps after evaluating the problem and forming the design brief and it will lay the foundations for the project. Poor modelling can lead to a failed design

Q

visual (CAD)

A

photorealistic CAD-based interactive models that use surface and solid modelling. They can be considered ‘digital mock-ups’.

Q

Advantages of conceptual modelling

A
  • It allows for user inputs into developing models
  • concept modelling allows for creative and innovative without the restriction of specific technology
  • it allows for opportunities for user trials
  • Possibilities of testing production methods and materials prior to production tooling
  • The modelling process can assist to start a conversation between the designers, engineers and other staff in a product design firm
  • Reducing possibility of costly mistakes and false stats by identifying them early
  • Functionality of the design becomes more obvious when reviewing physical models and prototypes
  • Testing proof of concept when examining moving concepts or internal mechanisms

Q

Problems with conceptual modelling

A
  • the model may not actually represent final product
  • Models are not always able to replicate in - service use
