Conception and Fetal Development Flashcards
What are the odds of a healthy couple getting pregnant?
The average healthy couple has only a 25% chance of getting pregnant each month. This is the best case scenario. Therefore, it can take four months or longer for typical couple to become pregnant.
How long can sperm be fertile in the female reproductive tract?
Most fertile in the first 24 hours but can survive up to 48-72 hours
How long is the ova fertile for?
12 to 24 hours after ovulation
When is the fertile period
There are exactly 6 days each cycle, where there is the chance of conceiving. They include:
The day of ovulation
Five days just before ovulation
Out of the 6 fertile days, which days have the best chances to conceive?
Three days before ovulation is the best chance of all, followed by the day before, and the day of ovulation.
Where does fertilization happen?
It usually takes place in the ampulla of the fallopian tube ( the outer 1/3 of the tube)
How many stages is the human development?
3 stages
Pre embryonic stage (first 14 days from fertilization)
Embryonic stage (2nd week/ day 15 to end of the 8th week)
Fetal stage (9th week until birth)
What is the placenta?
The placenta is the means of metabolic and nutrient exchange between embryonic and maternal circulations
What is the functions of amniotic fluid?
Permits symmetrical growth
Permits freedom of movement
Protects against mechanical injury by acting as a cushion
Controls embryos temperature
Allows umbilical cord to be free of compression
Act as a wedge during labor
What is the amnion?
An embryonic membrane that contains the amniotic fluid
The fetal side of the placenta is shiny and grey because it is covered by the amnion
What are the vessels in the umbilical cord?
1 large vein and 2 smaller arteries
What is the role of the vein and the 2 arteries of the umbilical cord?
Oxygenated blood is carried to the fetus by the vein
Deoxygenated blood is carried away from the fetus to the placenta by the two arteries
What is teratogens?
An agent that can disturb the development of the embryo or fetus
It may halt the pregnancy and/or produce a congenital malformation
What stage is a pregnancy most vulnerable to teratogens?
During the embryonic stage in first trimester
This is when fetal organs are first developing= organogenesis
Fetal development milestone at 4 week?
Fetal heart begins to beat
