Organizational design
The process of structuring a business’s people, information, and technology to enable the business to achieve its goals and be successful
Innovation
The creation or discovery of something new
Authority
The formally granted ability of an individual to make decisions, pursue goals, and obtain the resources necessary to support those decisions and goals
Line authority
The formal, direct authority that affects a business’s day-to-day operations
Staff authority
Advisory authority and often does not include the right to actually make decisions or take action
Responsibility
Having a duty to get a job done
Delegation
Assigning tasks to subordinates
Division of labor
Separating a big job into several smaller tasks
Unity of command
No employee should have to report to more than one manager or supervisor

Creating authority that flows into a clear, continuous line
Chain/Line of command
The flow of authority within an organization
span of control / span of management
How many workers are managed by one supervisor
Functional structure
Each unit or department within the organization has its own set of responsibilities and activities
Divisional structure
The organization is broken down into units
Matrix structure
Combines the functional structure and the divisional structure. Authority flows both down and across the organization
