Concentration, time and dose Flashcards
What are the main features of a dose-time effect curve?
Tmax, AUC,Cmax, Slope (absorption and elimination)
How can a steady state be achieved?
A steady infusion is administered
What is phenytoin?
an emergency anti-epileptic drug used to stop epileptic seizures in an emergency
it is efficacious at a concentration of 10-20mg/L
how is an infusion rate at steady state calculated?
concentration x CL
what is steady state?
where administration and elimination of a drug are in equilibrium
What is a loading dose?
loading dose is given to achieve therapeutic conc. quickly.
It’s used when elimination is slow or when a therapeutic concentration must be reached quickly i.e. emergencies
what is rosuvastatin?
a statin used to lower cholesterol and prevent complications in patients with ischaemic heart disease
tablet given once a day
what are the considerations that must be taken account for oral drugs?
usually not an emergency
patients can take medications at home
must consider how the body affects the drug (PK) specifically metabolism
what is vancomycin?
an antibiotic with activity against gram positive bacterial infections.
therapeutic success is associated with total drug exposure (AUC)
Given Intravenously
