What is combustion?
The chemical reaction between a fuel and oxygen. this includes the burning of wood, coal, petrol and other fuels.
What does combustion involve?
The reaction of organic molecules in the fuel’s with oxygen gas in the atmosphere.
What is complete combustion?
When fuel’s burn with a plentiful air and oxygen supply, releasing a lot of energy as heat.
What are the gases that complete combustion produce?
They produce both carbon dioxide (O2) and water vapour (H2O)
How can complete combustion be observed?
By opening the hole on a bunsen burner after it is ignited. This will give of a faintly visible blue flame.
What is incomplete combustion?
When fuel’s are burnt without a plentiful supply of air and oxygen.
What does incomplete cobustion produce?
It produces carbon monoxide and, carbon in the form of soot and water vapour.
Why is carbon monoxide bad for your health and potentially deadly?
When inhaled into the bloodstream, it instead of oxygen bind’s to the haemoglobin to form ‘Carboxyhemoglobin’. this deprives you cell’s of the oxygen and ultimately lead’s to the death of the victim.
Why is carbon (soot) bad for your health?
because it get’s into your blood stream and causes blockages in your arteries, leading to heart disease. can also cause blockages in the lung’s, causing asthma and lang cancer.
Why is the flame of a fire yellow?
because hot carbon atoms will be released from the fire, and the carbon atoms glow yellow when they are hot. as the fire cool’s down they will turn black and settle on surfaces as a black layer of soot.
What are some of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning?
symptoms include headaches, dizziness, convulsions, respiratory arrest, unconsciousness. all of these lead to death.
Where do you find incomplete combustion in every day life?
When you turn the bunsen burner onto safety flame mode and close the hole, depleting their oxygen supply. this will give of a yellow flame that is not overly hot.
