bases 1 Flashcards
What is a base?
Bases are ionic compounds that break apart to form a negatively charged ion (OH-).
What is a strong and a weak base?
A strong base is a solution with large amounts of OH- ions and a weak base has only a few OH-ions.
What is a alkali?
A alkali is base that can be dissolved inwater
What happens when a base reacts with a acid ?
The two will react and neutralise each other, producing salt and water.
What happens when bases come into contact with grease or oils?
A base will dissolve the oil and grease on you hand to form a soap.
What happens if you wash your hand’s with a strong base?
The base will dissolve the naturally produced oil and also it will burn you skin, making it very dangerous.
When does the bases ability to dissolve oils and grease come in handy in our day to day life?
Bases are often used in oven, shower, glass and toilet cleaners because they are very good at removing oil’s and grease from surfaces.
Why are bases used in indigestion tablets?
Because the base will react with the excess acid in the stomach and neutralise some of it.
Why do you not want to take to many indigestion tablets?
Because then you could neutralise all the acid within you stomach, meaning that you could not digest any food.
how do you treat a acidic sting?
By applying a base that has the opposite PH number to the acid.
