Comptia A+ 220-801 Chapter 2 Flashcards
What are used for permanent storage and quick access.
PG 70
Hard disk drive (HDD) systems (hard disks or hard drives for short)
What controls the drives? PG 70
Controller
This is the translator, converting signals from the controller to signals the computer can understand. PG 70
Host bus adapter (HBA)
Name some of the components of a hard drive? pg 72
Platters Read/write heads Tracks Sectors Cylinders Clusters (allocation units)
Name the 5 speeds of a conventional HDD? pg 74
5400 rpm,7200 rpm,10,000 rpm,12,000 rpm,15,000 rpm
is a magnetic storage medium that uses a diskette made of thin, flexible plastic enclosed in a protective casing.
floppy disk (or floppy diskette)
What are the 3 types of Optical Drives? pg pg 78
CD,DVD,Blu Ray
What does RAID Stand for and describe what you can accomplish with RAID
RAID stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks. It’s a way of combining the storage power of more than one hard disk for a special purpose, such as increased performance or fault tolerance.
What is RAID 1? pg 93
Also known as disk mirroring. RAID 1 is a method of producing fault tolerance
by writing all data simultaneously to two separate drives. If one drive fails, the other contains
all the data and will become the primary drive.
What is RAID 5? pg 93
Combines the benefits of both RAID 0 and RAID 1, creating a redundant striped volume set. Unlike RAID 1, however, RAID 5 does not employ mirroring for redundancy.
What are the 5 tape back up formats and whats the max capacity can each hold? pg 94
Quarter-inch Cartridge (QIC) 200KB to 525MB
Digital Linear Tape (DLT) Up to 160GB
Eight Millimeter (Exabyte) Up to 800GB
Digital Audio Tape (DAT)/Digital Data
Storage (DDS) Up to 300GB
Linear Tape-Open (LTO) Up to 1.5TB (12.8TB planned)
What are the Different Sizes and Types of Floppy Diskette?
pg77

What are Platters? PG 70
is the circular disk on which magnetic data is stored in a hard disk drive.
The original PC floppy diskette, which used a platter that was 51⁄4 g in diameter and known as this? pg 76
minifloppy diskette,
Flash Memory pg 95
This is an electronic non-volatile computer storage medium that can be electrically erased and reprogrammed.
Introduced by Toshiba in 1984, flash memory was developed from EEPROM (electrically erasable programmable read-only memory)
