Compounds and Reactants. Flashcards
Model.
A diagram or three dimensional object that makes an idea easier to understand.
Ratio.
A link between two values, e.g. 2:1
Formula.
The chemical symbols and numbers that show how many atoms of each element a substance contains.
Atom.
The basic building block of an element that cannot be chemically broken down
Element.
A substance made up of only one type of atom.
Molecule.
Two or more atoms held together by strong chemical bonds.
Compound.
Two or more elements chemically joined together, such as water (H2O)
Fuel.
A material that is burned, for the purpose of generating heat and energy.
Reaction.
A process which changes substances by the rearrangement of their atoms.
Chemical Equation.
A chemical reaction written in terms of reactants and products.
Burning.
The reaction of fuels with oxygen that produces heat and energy.
Acid.
A substance with a pH lower than 7.
Product.
A substance formed from a chemical reaction.
Base.
Reacts with an acid to neutralise it.
Carbonate.
A type of compound containing carbon and oxygen.
Organic compound.
A compound that contains carbon.
Polymer.
A large molecule, made up of a very long chain, of smaller molecules.
Oxidation.
The reaction of a substance with oxygen that increases the amount of oxygen contained in a compound.
Stable.
Unlikely to break up.
Thermal decomposition.
When one substance is changed into at least two new substances due to heating
Reactants.
Starting substances in a chemical reaction.
