Acids and Alkalis. Flashcards
Acid.
A substance that has a pH lower than 7.
Hydroxide.
The particle present in alkalis.
Irritant.
Something that reddens the skin.
Neutral.
When a substance is neither acidic nor alkaline.
Alkali.
A soluble base that has a pH higher than 7.
Equation.
A way of summarising a chemical equation with the reactants on the left of the arrow and the products on the right.
Strong acid/alkali.
Contains a lot of hydrogen ions/particles (acid) or a lot of hydroxide ions/particles (alkali).
Weak acid/alkali.
Contains a few hydrogen ions/particles (acid) or a few hydroxide ions/particles (alkali).
Universal Indicator.
A mixture of dyes that create a range of colour depending on the strength of the acidity or alkalinity being tested.
Soapy.
The effect produced when an alkali is added to water.
Litmus.
An indicator which tells us if something is an acid or an alkali.
Titration.
A laboratory method allowing accurate volumes of liquid to be tested.
