Compounds and Chemical equations Flashcards
Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table
what is a compound?
substances that elements mix and match to make
what happens during chemical reaction?
- at least one new substance
- when two or more elements react they form compounds
- the atoms of each element are in fixed proportions
- the atoms are held together by chemical bonds
what does a formula show?
what atoms are in a compound, the number of element symbols tell you how many elements are in the compound
name 5 formulas
carbon dioxide - CO2
water - H2O
sodium chloride - NaCl
carbon monoxide - CO
sulfuric acid - H2SO4
how are chemical reactions shown?
by using chemical equations, one way to show a chemical equation is through a word equation
whats an example of a word equation?
- methane reacts with oxygen to make carbon dioxide and water
methane + oxygen — carbon dioxide + water
what are the chemicals on the left side?
they are reactants because they react with each other
what are the chemicals on the right side?
they are called products because they’ve been produced from the reactants
how do you balance an equation?
- find an element that doesn’t balance and write a number (in pencil) in front of one of the substances to try and even it
- if it is still isn’t balanced, keep trying with other numbers until they are all balanced evenly
