Compounds Flashcards
The law of constant composition
All samples of a given compound have the same proportions of their constituent element.
Polyatomic ion
An ion contained in a molecule that has more than one of the same ions; eg, x2 NO3 in Mg(NO3)2
Empirical formula difference to molecular formula
The simplest whole number formula is the empirical HO, while the actual bomber of atoms in each molecule is the molecular formula H2O2.
Atomic element
Single atoms as their basic units, most elements fall into this category
Molecular elements
Diatomic molecules, 2 atoms of the same element bonded together.
Molecular compounds
Composed of 2 or more of a non-metal.
Ionic compounds
Are composed of one or more cations paired with one or more anions. Cations, metals and anions, non metals.
