Compounds Flashcards

1
Q

What are ionic compounds?

A
  1. Made up of a metal cation & a non-metal anion. The bond that forms between them is called ionic bond.
  2. Valence electrons are transferred from a metal to a non-metal (metals lose electrons, non-metals gain electrons to be stable).
  3. Overall electric charge of the compound is zero-the sum of the charges on the cations equals the sum of the changes on the anions.

Q

How do you write and name the formulas for ionic compounds?

A
  1. Metal cation has the same name as the neutral, metal atom. (e.g. calcium ion Ca^2+ is still called calcium)
  2. Non-metal cation ends in ‘-ide’ (e.g. Iodine becomes ‘iodide’)
  3. The metal ALWAYS comes before the non metal when naming a compound/writing a formula.

Q

What is covalent bonding?

A

Covalent bonding is the sharing of electrons between NON-Metals (Chlorine being a non metal can only undergo covalent bonding.
