Compounds Flashcards
1
Q
What are ionic compounds?
A
- Made up of a metal cation & a non-metal anion. The bond that forms between them is called ionic bond.
- Valence electrons are transferred from a metal to a non-metal (metals lose electrons, non-metals gain electrons to be stable).
- Overall electric charge of the compound is zero-the sum of the charges on the cations equals the sum of the changes on the anions.
2
Q
How do you write and name the formulas for ionic compounds?
A
- Metal cation has the same name as the neutral, metal atom. (e.g. calcium ion Ca^2+ is still called calcium)
- Non-metal cation ends in ‘-ide’ (e.g. Iodine becomes ‘iodide’)
- The metal ALWAYS comes before the non metal when naming a compound/writing a formula.
3
Q
What is a binary compound?
A
A compound make up of 2 elements.
4
Q
What is ionic bonding?
A
The transfer of electrons from 2 different atoms, including one metal and a non-metal (e.g NaCl).
5
Q
What is covalent bonding?
A
Covalent bonding is the sharing of electrons between NON-Metals (Chlorine being a non metal can only undergo covalent bonding.
